One hundred Movile

“One hundred Movile” presents a landscape of great scientific and aesthetic value. There is a scientific dispute about how these mounds were formed. Some scholars say that “One hundred Movile” is the only place in Europe, where it is concentrated in such a large number of submarine reefs of the Mediterranean – the tertiary water basin, which at that time covered the territory of the Republic of Moldova with about 20 Millions of years ago. Other scholars believe the mounds have formed due to landslides and collapses.

This unique landscape is situated on the slopes of the Prut Valley, south-south-east of Branistea and Avrămeni villages in Bălţi County. “One hundred Movile” has a length of 8 km and a width of 2.3-1.7 km, and its originality is imprinted by the set of relief microforms – over 3,500 mounds, mostly elongated, pronounced, with steep slopes And heights from 1-3 m to 30 m as “Movila Gypsy”.

The landscape comprises 6 terraces of the Prut, marked from the altitude of 50-60 m of the meadow to 160-170 meters of the slope and it covers an area of about 1600 ha. The strips between the rows of mounds are thinly bluish. The rocks and their rows are parallel to the Prut meadow.

One of the legends says there have been fierce battles here, and the conquerors buried their heroes, raising these mounds: for the commoner – the smaller ones, the chiefs – the larger ones. ”
